At 6-foot-2, Fort Worth North Side senior middle blocker
Ayve Alvarado can dominate a volleyball
court. She has the size and
speed to redirect almost any shot that her opponents try to get past her.
That is why she leads Class 4A area players in blocks
and why her team is going to the playoffs for the first time in her
career. With Alvarado leading the defensive charge, North
Side could make a statement in the postseason.
Tell me about your team. This
year we are special because we have earned our spot for the playoffs
and we seem to have all the
ingredients
together. It’s just a special team and I am happy to be a part of
it.
What is this year different from last year? The
girls are more confident and trustworthy with each other on and off
the court. Every aspect
of
the game has increased. We all wanted to go to the playoffs more
than anything.
How does it feel to tower over your teammates? Well,
I have been playing with these girls all my life. So it doesn’t make
a difference.
They
feel as tall as I am and I feel as short as they are.
How big of an advantage is it for you being so tall? Starting
off, people thought I was going to be a great player because of my
height,
but
it has taken a lot of hard work to stay where I am skill-wise. My
coaches push me hard every day in practice. It’s nice to be tall,
but it’s also
a
big responsibility.
What colleges are you looking at for next year? Texas
A&M-Commerce, because they have a good academic program that I like.
I just
want
to go anywhere that I can get my education and, if I get to play
volleyball, it is a bonus.
What is your nickname? I
have a lot of nicknames, but usually it’s Big Girl. We are usually
called Big Girl and the Little People.
